He first worked as a medical lab officer, but has been involved with politics since 1987 when he become a District Councillor for Easington. He had worked as a researcher for previous MP John Cummings since 2003, and was also Secretary of Easington Constituency Labour Party. He lives in Seaham, County Durham
with his wife and family.
