Grangetown is a suburb of Sunderland
in Tyne and Wear

. It is situated two miles south of Sunderland City Centre and two miles north of Ryhope
. Grangetown was previously known for heavy traffic congestion, as it contained the intersection of the original route of the A1018 road
(which was the original route of the A19 and the main road into Sunderland from the south) and the inner and outer ring roads. Since the opening of the new Southern Radial Route in mid-2008, traffic has become less of an issue in the area. The new by-pass links Grangetown to the city centre via Hendon
to the north, and Ryhope, Seaham
and the A19 trunk road to the south.
Because of its geography and general low level above the sea, analogue television reception in most of Grangetown is poor, with many residents aerials facing the Bilsdale transmitter
in North Yorkshire
, rather than the Pontop Pike transmitter in County Durham
. They therefore receive Tyne Tees South rather than Tyne Tees North.
Grangetown was once home to a significant Jewish population in the streets around Ryhope Road and Hunter Terrace, but the population has dwindled over recent decades.
The area also boasts a significant shopping precinct along Ryhope Road, including a large Asda
store on Leechmere Road, and a number of pubs, social clubs and eateries.
