The town was named after hearby headland which was originally named by W. Archdeacon, an Admiralty hydrographic surveyor

 in 1875. The name is descriptive. Land was set aside for a camping reserve in 1946 and the popularity of the area led to a demand for building blocks in the 1950s. Lots were surveyed in 1959 and gazetted in 1966.

Dynamite Bay is located just south of the town and sheltered from the winds off the coast by low lying cliff
