where he excelled in both academics and athletics. He made All-County in Basketball and Track & Field his senior year. In addition, he earned All-County and All-State honors in Football as a defensive back. In February 1983, Greg signed a letter of intent to play football at Florida State. It was an important event for Mosley High School, since four other athletes signed letters of intent that day. David Schrenker and Louis Berry signed letters to Florida State, while Clarence Edwards and Fredrick Wilson signed letters of intent to play for Southern Mississippi. This number of athletes at one time was a first for the school. A few weeks later, the sixth Mosley player, Tommy Dugosh, signed a letter of intent to play for Troy University

In 1983, as a true freshman, Newell was redshirted and spent the year on the scout team. In 1984, he received the bulk of his playing experience on special teams. It was 1985 when Greg came into his own as a player. He was the starting free safety for the next three seasons.
