Steinhafel is a Milwaukee-area native. His grandfather, an Austrian immigrant, founded the Steinhafels Furniture store in Milwaukee in 1934. Gregg began working in the store when was in grade school, performing odd jobs.
In 1979, Steinhafel was recruited as a merchandising trainee by Target. He is a graduate of Carroll University (Carroll College at the time) of Waukesha, Wisconsin and Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.
