Dennis tells the detective that there's been string of bar robberies in the area, but he doesn’t seem to be interested. Mac again brings up the idea to buy a gun, which Dennis supports. Dee and Charlie are against the idea because of the potential for an accident. As they are discussing this, Dee’s new boyfriend, Colin (Michael Rosenbaum
) arrives to take her out to a restaurant. Mac and Dennis don’t like him. Charlie reveals that Colin is a 'player' who has dated every bartender in the area.
At home, Charlie receives a visit from his furious landlord, Hwang, demanding he pays the $854 in due rent money. They begin screaming at each other, and Charlie tells him that he placed a couple of bad investments. Hwang demands that Charlie pay him the money in one days time.
After purchasing the gun, Mac and Dennis store it behind the counter. They agree to be careful with it and only use it should the need arise. They quickly reneg, and head to the basement of the bar. The two congratulate each other on their marksmanship (on shooting a log in the basement) as Charlie comes in. They insist he hold the gun. He declines at first, but is taken with the feeling of power the gun gives him. Meanwhile, Dee's new boyfriend Colin reveals himself to be a gun enthusiast. They go on a date to a shooting range where Dee tries to initiate intimacy with him, only to be brushed off, as Colin is 'turned on' by her firing the pistol.
Frustrated with the lack of progress the police seem to be making on the investigation, Mac and Dennis decide to become 'vigilantes' The two decide to practice firing the gun again, but discover that it is missing. They come to the conclusion that Charlie took the gun. Hwang returns to get the rent and Charlie non-chalantly lifts up his shirt to reveal the gun in the front waistband of his pants. Through the weapon, Charlie intimidates his landlord and implies that besides getting the rent money, he has the means to get anything done.
Mac and Dennis prepare to do some sleuthing by putting together their own detective kit and begin bickering about which Hardy Boy they want to be. As Mac is ready to head out and do some crime solving, Dennis deduces that Colin is the thief and has been dating all those other bartenders to scope out the bars so that he could rob them later. They rush over to Charlie’s place to retrieve the gun, and then track down Colin who is at a club kissing another girl.
They realized that that this club was already robbed, so Mac plans to have Colin rob their bar again. Mac and Dennis tell him that even though the thief stole the safe, he didn’t get all of their money. They reveal to Colin that the rest of the money is stored in the register. After Colin drives off, Dennis calls Dee and tells her to meet him and Mac at the pub.
In the pub, they shut off the circuit breaker as all three of them wait behind the pool table for the thief to return to the scene of the crime. A hooded individual enters the bar and goes for the register. Dennis tells Mac to cue the flashlight, but he accidentally drops it. This freaks out the intruder who attempts to escape. The three begin to panic and don’t know what to do. Dee and Mac yell at Dennis to shoot the assailant, which he does. A familiar voice screams out “I’m shot” and the three realize that it's Charlie. Dennis, who didn’t want to stain his car with blood, reluctantly agrees to drive Charlie to the hospital.
In the waiting room, the three argue about whose fault it was that Charlie got shot. They are finally able to see Charlie who revealed that he stole the money to pay the rent and was trying to capitalize on the other robberies so that they could collect money from the insurance company. The four friends wholeheartedly agree to get rid of the gun. Charlie then asks Dee to get a nurse in order to talk to Mac and Dennis privately. He then asks them if they are really getting rid of the gun. Mac and Dennis say no as they all gleefully smile. Dee later receives a call from Colin, who while talking to her is stealing money from the gang’s register.
