Gustav Friedrich Hertzberg was the eldest son Gustav Ludwig Hertzberg and his wife, the former Friederike Bucholz. He studied theology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg

On his death Hertzberg was survived by his second wife, Auguste Ziebarth, who he married in 1862. His first wife, Rosalie Carpenter, died in 1859 in child-birth.
