Middleton was born in Hove

and originally worked in the London Stock Exchange
, before turning to acting in the 1930s. In his earlier films he often portrayed an amiable idiot, but many of his later roles were military officers in the British Army or Navy.
He died in 1973, following a heart attack, aged 65.
