She was laid down at Collingwood Shipyards Ltd., Collingwood
on 26 April 1941 and launched on 4 October of that year. She was commissioned into the RCN 6 weeks later on 26 November.
On 19 May 1942, Halifax, under command of Acting Lieutenant Commander C. Copelin RCNR rescued 3 survivors from the crew of the American trawler Foam which was attacked and sunk by gunfire from U-432 on 17 May approximately 85 nautical miles (157.4 km) south of Halifax Harbour

Halifax was decommissioned from the RCN on 12 July 1945 and sold later that year as the mercantile Halifax.
