(蔡依林) in her Dancing Diva(舞孃)Album led her to be “Best Female Artiste of the Year” and was also nominated for “Best Song”. The album has become Tsai's biggest album yet, selling over 2 million copies in Asia.
His positive spirit and his creative talent were recognized by Singapore’s Health Promotion Board Breathe (HPB) and he was made the first HPB Breathe Ambassador , in April 2011. Needless to say, he was also the Composer and Singer for their theme song “The Choice is mine”.
Troy has grown up in a Christian environment. Both his parents are Christians. His mum has always been a strong influence in his life. Back in the 1980s, his mum was one of the top Beauticians in Singapore and an international judge for many beauty pageants.
She grew up with 14 brothers and sisters, and she was one of the older siblings. She had to work and go to school at the same time to get her whole family going.
This independent and self-reliant nature in the mother left an indelible mark in Troy and as he grew older, he would often motivate others to play their part well and make contributions. Troy believes that everyone has to learn to play a role and play a function. And to have a function and role is not only to be able to take care of ourselves but also to be then ready to take care of someone else.
Against the Chinese Traditional upbringing, his mother was offered a singing recording contract when she was in her late teens. Her father strongly discouraged from her entering the entertainment scene and as a filial child, she relented.
Troy himself had to face constant discouragement from his parents not to pursue his dreams initially. He understood that it was out of their love and concern for him that they had objected, knowing the complications in the entertainment industry.
At an early age of seven, he was involved in theatre and music performances. He was the main performer of "Yamaha Music School" in many of their children’s musicals. During his high school, he was also the Lead Singer and representative for his school choir. He had want to focus on studies but was still eventually selected to join the school choir and landed with many solo performances and helped boost the choir membership numbers setting the way for many male students to join the choir .
Troy left Singapore at a young age of 14 and lived in the United Kingdom (UK) for seven years. He was exposed a culture which creativity is very highly respected. He was largely influenced by the western cultures in his composition of songs, hence the western influence in his melody.
The England Christian Union unveiled to Troy Christian Music- traditional hymnalsand he was also able to let creativity be explored in a different field. It was a different world that has opened him up to new ideas and new ways.
He was however not ashamed of his asian ways and values, rather impervious to the cultural influence.
He learned to cook started to appreciate his family and friends back home in Singapore. In his first year away, he was overwhelmed with everything new as the days plodded on, home was on his mind every day.
He then bought his own keyboard with his own savings and started expressing himself through music. With the many nights of missing home, he started to churn out his original songs and soon he started making into demos for his own collection and to hear the songs/ his music again.
As you get to know Troy, he tends to be someone who prefers to talk less and show more in action as he is surprisingly shy as a person. Nevertheless, he started to gain strength in character when he went abroad for his studies. He graduated as one of the top students from Brunel University, graduating with a First Class Honours Degree in Interior Architecture.
Someone from a top recording company heard Troy's music demo playing in a friend's place and made contact and the inroad into the music industry started.
Baby Bye was the first song Troy ever sold (To date , he has written up to 4000 songs and still counting).
Though he did not take very well to the competitor nature of the event, he learnt much from the competition and relished the fact that many enjoyed his performance.
It is interesting to note that for the first round performance of final 12, he was the only contestant who did his own midi arrangement for Ah Mei's Jie Tuo- indeed a multi- talented performer.
In this new album, Troy wrote a song for his mum and another for his Sister. His mum is someone who has shaped him into who he is today. She has taught him not to be afraid of hard work and to understand that to achieve his dreams, he must be prepared to start from scratch, ground zero. His Mum has always been a silent pillar of strength. She pushes him because she knows the world can be harsh and he must not be naïve and dependent on others. Yet, she is the one who would help him in the shadows. He appreciates her and feels that he has not told her enough and how much I love her. Too many take for granted their family members, especially their parents. With that, Troy presented his mum with a song and he did it now, to show his love, not when it’s too late.
