Hakonechloa is a monotypic
genus of deciduous grasses in the subfamily Arundinoideae
. It originates from Japan and is used as a foliage plant in gardens in temperate climates.

There are several cultivars of this small Japanese clump forming ground covering grass. 'Aureola' has leaves that are striped bright golden lime green, which fade to pink in autumn. The Royal Horticultural Society have given this cultivar their prestigious Award of Garden Merit
(AGM). There is also a yellow foliage form 'All Gold' and the straight species (simply known as Hakonechloa macra) is also used in gardens.
