In 1988, when it was called the Grosser Philips-Preis, the race's format was the same as the current version – a Group 3 event over 1,600 metres. The following year it was dropped to Listed class and extended to 1,800 metres. It became ungraded in 1993, and its distance reverted to 1,600 metres in 1995. Under the title Schlenderhaner Stutenpreis the race regained Listed status in 2000. It was promoted back to Group 3 level in 2004.
The Hamburger Stutenpreis has been known by various other names, and some are presently used for different races. These include the "Schwarzgold-Rennen
" (1995–98) and the "Fährhofer Stutenpreis
" (2001–05). Recently it has been run as the Alice-Cup (2006), the Credit Suisse-Rennen (2007) and the Preis der Spielbank Hamburg (2008–09).
