Bencherif started his career with Nottingham Forest, but never made a first-team appearance. He was loaned out to Lincoln City

 appearances, scoring once against Chesterfield. He was released by Forest at the end of the 2008–09 season and joined Macclesfield Town on a one-year deal.

He became a first team regular in the first half of the season at the Moss Rose, but a broken ankle in a game away at Rochdale ended his season.In May 2010 Bencherif extended his stay at the Moss Rose until summer 2011 when he signed a new one year deal. On 23 June 2011, Bencherif signed for Notts County.
