Hanyi Railway
Encyclopedia
Hanyi Railway or Hankou-Yichang Railway, is a railway currently being constructed between Hankou
(a borough of Wuhan
) and Yichang
in the Chinese province of Hubei
. It will be a section of the future Huhanrong Passenger Dedicated Line
from Shanghai
to Wuhan
to Chengdu
. The adjacent sections are the Hewu Railway (Hefei-Wuhan) in the east (opened in 2009) and the Yiwan Railway
(Yichang-Wanzhou) in the west (opened December 2010).
While many high-speed railways recently built in China (e.g., the Wuhan–Guangzhou High-Speed Railway
or Zhengxi Passenger Railway
) closely parallel existing railway lines, the Hanyi Railway takes a different (much more direct) route between Wuhan and Yichang from the existing railway. Thus it will bring mainline railway service to places that presently have no railways at all (Xiantao
, Qianjiang
), or only have access via a dead-end branch (Jingzhou
, which now is served only by a branch from Jingmen
).
According to a news item from the Wuhan City Government dated July 10, 2008, the plans for the railways were finalized at the time, and the construction was to begin shortly. According to the plans, the construction should be completed by the end of 2011.
