Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur is an academic autonomous engineering college
under the Uttar Pradesh Technical University
. Its programs have been conferred autonomous status under the university. It is the second engineering institute in Uttar Pradesh after the former University of Roorkee. The institute holds ISO 9001:2000 Certification. It offers Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees in engineering, as well as Masters degrees in Business administration and Computer Applications.
In 1959, when the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was established, IIT classes were held in the canteen building of HBTI until IITK had its own campus.
HBTI is also the mother institute of the National Sugar Institute
, the Government Central Textile Institute and the Glass Institute.
Thus the Government Research Institute, Cawnpore was started in 1920. It was housed in two rooms of what was called Sher Wali Kothi. The old majestic building is still intact at the north-west corner of the Company Bagh crossing, Nawabganj. Dr. Annett was then the principal of the Opium Research Laboratory of which the new institute was an adjunct.
On 25 November 1921, the Governor of the United Provinces
, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler
(1869–1938), K.C.S.I., C.I.E., laid the foundation of the present building. It was rechristened Government Technological Institute in 1921.
In 1926, it got the name Harcourt Butler Technological Institute. Its first principal of Indian nationality was Dattatreya Yashwant Athawale (Rao Saheb Rai Bahadur).
Both the campuses are connected with Wi-Fi and internet LAN connections in all the hostels.

B.Tech. (Bachelor of Technology) courses are offered in 13 fields of engineering and technology and all have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA):
Till 1970, HBTI conducted courses in Sugar Technology, Textiles and Glass Technology. Subsequently, three new institutes - the National Sugar Institute
, the Government Central Textile Institute and the Glass Institute were created out of these departments.
In addition to bachelor level programs, Diploma Courses of DOEACC, MCA, M.Tech. (both part-time and regular), MBA (through STEP-HBTI) and Doctoral programs in all the discipline of Engineering, Technology and Basic Sciences courses are available. Besides playing an educational role, the Institute also runs research programs sponsored by government institutions and research organizations.
It was established in 1986 at the institute, for motivating science, technology and engineering graduates to take up entrepreneurship. It has been engaged in the activities of technology development, technology incubation, technology transfer and technology applications in industry. STEP- HBTI has been working as an apex organization for transforming technical education into entrepreneurship.

Campus
The institute is spread across two campuses, the east campus (77 acres) and the west campus (271 acres) situated 3 km apart. Thus, the institute campus is a conglomerate of two campuses:East campus (academic block)
The academic campus shares a border with the CSA university campus. It comprises :- The main building which is a stone structure inaugurated in 1921; it houses the main academic block and department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology, along with departments related to Science and Humanities.
- Five department buildings of Computer Sciences and IT, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics, Civil and Leather Technology.
- Computer centre, Library Building, Auditorium, Workshop, Oil Technology Association of India (OTAI) head quarter, Council of leather exports central region office, Paint and Coatings Technology Association(PACT) head-quarters.
- Three girls hostels, two boys hostels and one under-construction boys’ hostel.
West campus (residential block)

The faculty has contributed with research papers in national and international journals and presentations in India as well as abroad. STEP is a project sponsored by HBTI, Kanpur along with the Department of Science and Technology, government of India, New Delhi.
