Hammond was a short-statured but dangerous outside-left
who started his career with non league Edge Hill. He was signed by Everton
in 1890, but only made one appearance for the Merseyside
team.
He then signed for Sheffield United in 1892 and went on to score 53 goals from 108 appearances for the Blades. He jointly holds the record number of goals scored in a match for Sheffield United - 5 versus Bootle
