After gaining Italian
citizenship
in 2002 to please his professional club Savona
, Van der Meer tried to get his Dutch passport back to play for Holland once again. He didn't succeed. On December 21, 2005 the court of appeal in the Netherlands decided that Dutch immigration services did the right thing by ordering Van der Meer's passport.
