During the Headship of Mr Richard Hewitt the School took a major step forward when the Sixth Form College was opened in 1997. During 2008 the 'New Field' was added providing an acreage equivalent to six rugby pitches. In 2009 it changed its status once more to become a Foundation School, the first in Suffolk
During 2010 the school achieved the highest progress measures (known as CVA measures) in the East of England region and in 2010 an "Outstanding" OFSTED
report. In 2009 Hartismere became Suffolk's first Foundation School and in September 2010 the school became Suffolk's first Academy
and one of the first ten Outstanding Academies in England. It holds the Suffolk record for 5A*-C grades scoring 96% in 2010 a feat repeated in 2011. The School received the SSAT award for outstanding pupil progress in each year from 2008 to 2011. The school is the only specialist Music Academy in the east of England region and is particularly sought after as a center of excellence by able musicians. This status was achieved simultaneously with the school's transition to become an independent state school in 2010.

History
The school was founded in the 15th century. Its original form predates the grammar school which was founded in 1451. A variety of sites have been occupied by the School which has existed as a National School, a County School and was joined by a Secondary Modern in 1935. After considerable controversy the Grammar School was closed in the late 1960s although it continues to support the school in various ways. The school became a Comprehensive and became known as Hartismere shortly thereafter. The site of the current School was excavated in 2008 revealing continuous habitation dating back to Neolithic times.
