History

The Royal Decree ordaining the establishment of the Hashemite University was issued in June 1996. A Royal Committee was formed to manage and supervise this task headed by His Excellency the senate, Mudhar Badran, and included seven other members of specialists and experts in different fields of higher education. Similarly, The Board of Trustees was formed and included eleven members of specialists and experts of different education-related fields and headed by his Excellency the senate, Mudhar Babdran.

The total area of the university's campus is 8519 acres 15% of which was used for buildings, 25 % for planting and agriculture, and the rest which is more than half of the area (65%) is desert.

Teaching started at the onset of the academic year 1995/1996. Students were admitted to the three functioning faculties: Sciences and arts, Economics and Administrative Sciences and Educational Sciences.

The Hashemite University is a four-year coeducational institution, its objectives were stated to be a university committed to excellence in teaching and research. Its grand mission is to offer service and consultation to the local community in addition to the larger society, and to be a cornerstone in the accumulative efforts with other sister universities in Jordan to enhance academic cooperation between Jordan and Arab nations and between Jordan and the world.

As of the academic year 2009/2010 there were 3012 undergraduate students and 46 graduate students. International students number 683 forming 22.33% of the total students, mostly from neighboring countries.

  • Faculty of Sciences (FOS) The Faculty of Science was initially established as part of a combined Science and Arts Faculty in 1995/1996. In 1998/1999, the Department of Geology was separated from the Faculty and become a part of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment and in 2001/2002 .

  • Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (FOE) Since its beginning , September 1995, the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Science has extensive and diverse specialized programs that mainly fulfill its education , research, services and national missions . Under this general interest, the faculty offered four main BA courses i.e., Accounting, Business Administration, Economic, and Finance.


Courses offering recognize the fundamental role of the offered courses in both business and liberal arts education , in addition to equip students for a very much wide range of economic, financial, banking and management careers.

The expansion of the BA courses has been reflected positively in the number of students enrolled. Statistically, 3880 enrollments have been reflected by the faculty during the year 2007/2008 compared to 123 enrollments for year 1995/1996. Currently, there are 174 students at the master level and 3706 students at the undergraduate level.
