Hawaiian Barbecue is a marketing term used to stylize the Hawaiian islands' plate lunch
for mainland Americans. Also known as Hawaiian Barbeque and Hawaiian BBQ, the term was first coined by Eddie Flores, Jr., founder of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue
in 1999. Flores created the term Hawaiian Barbecue when he expanded to the mainland with the intention of giving customers a better idea of the Hawaiian plate lunch
cuisine and to draw excitement from the popularity of Hawaii. Flores and his partner Johnson Kam are well-known in Hawaii for popularizing the plate lunch in Hawaii through their chain of L&L Drive-Inn restaurants.
