 in Perth she won gold in the 200m freestyle, silver in the 400m freestyle, silver in the 400m individual medley, and bronze in the 200m butterfly.

For the rest of her career, Lewis focused on the 800m freestyle, in which her best Olympic result was a silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics

, Lewis won a bronze medal in the 5 km Open Water competition. She had planned to attempt to qualify for the 10 km open water event at the 2004 Summer Olympics

, but this event was removed from the competition. Lewis announced her retirement on 22 November 2001, and now runs the "Hayley Lewis Swim School" located at one of Australia's largest shopping centres.

Lewis currently holds the longest standing Australian record—the Women's 1500m freestyle with a time of 16.04.40 which she swam at the Pan Pacific Championships in Kobe, Japan in 1993. There are no current records held by any Australian swimmers before 2007. Hers has stood for 16 years.

Post swimming career

Hayley became the host of the Australian version of The Biggest Loser in 2010, continuing in the 2011 season.
