– who had met at university started out with the 1957 Directory of Opportunities for Graduates and in 1959 relaunched Man About Town , which was to become an influential (if unprofitable) men's consumer magazine. The company failed in its relaunch of the British news weekly Topic, the title closing at the end of 1962, within three months of the takeover. The partners split in 1965, with Heseltine renaming his half of the business Haymarket Press to publish Management Today. The company was renamed Haymarket Publishing and, due to its growing presence in online media and live events, it was rebranded as Haymarket Media Group in 2007.

The company's first foray in exhibitions occurred in 1990 on the back of the popular Autosport weekly magazine, produced by Haymarket Consumer Media. The consumer exhibitions division is now a market leader in the UK, with an increasing portfolio and audited attendance of over half a million paid visitors.The Exhibitions division operates in consumer and business-to-business sectors, whilst running a successful joint venture with BBC Worldwide and various other partners.

Haymarket publishes business media across print, web and mobile in New York, Australia, Germany, India and Hong Kong. The company has also licensed titles and content for publication in over 110 territories in which it does not publish.It publishes a number of titles in India, including Autocar, Autocar Professional, What Car? and What Hifi? Sound and Vision. In the summer of 2007, Haymarket launched an Indian version of Campaign, its advertising industry weekly, with an initial circulation of 17,000. "Every sector of the media is growing in India as we speak, and it just seems right [to launch more titles].
