Heiko Schmidt
Heiko Schmidt (born May 16, 1963 in Germany) is a record executive, record producer, songwriter, music publisher, entrepreneur and investor.
Best known as the co-founder and MD of the successful music production house Paramusic. Heiko is CEO of Parasongs Corporation, an innovative music publishing company with entities in Germany, Australia, Japan and the US. In Germany he was the founder/MD of the media marketing company Paramedia. Heiko has been responsible for signing and developing many notable songwriters and recording artists, including wordwide multi platinum selling brand and act “Sweetbox”. Heiko successfully broke 5 artists through the Sweetbox brand. Heiko is also Managing Partner of Parafund Management LLC, Managing Director of Joey Capital LLC, both active PE investors in entertainment and innovative media & tech projects.
Early Life
Heiko was born in Gera, Germany, into a family of classical musicians.
He started playing classical piano at the age of 5, he received an “Outstanding Talent Scholarship” at the Music
University in Leipzig at the age of 6, and was a top 10 contestant
in the International Bach Contest.
He continued his musical education at the Special School for Music in Halle, Germany
and graduated from High school in Leipzig/Germany in 1982.
Career
After high school, Heiko worked as a recording assistant in a large recording studio in Leipzig/Germany, where he recorded classical orchestras, symphonic brass bands, big bands, rock bands, pop groups, country music artists and other music genres.
Heiko became friends with the Jazz and big band legend Peter Herbolzheimer while working on his album.(link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Herbolzheimer).

Between 1984 and 1989 Heiko studied and graduated as “Diplom-Tonmeister” from Music University “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin/Germany, a 5 year master degree education for top specialists, containing further education in classical piano, conducting, songwriting, sound engineering, mathematics, economics, acoustics, electrical engineering and psychology.

1988, Heiko started writing and producing music.. He discovered the recording artist “Iriabo” and the first song “Deine Märchen” , a german speaking pop song, became a top 10 radio hit in Germany in early 1989.

In spring 1989, he escaped from Eastern Germany to West Germany through the Iron Curtain.
1989 – 2003: ZDF and Live Line TV Productions Years
After 6 months working as sound engineer for ZDF in Mainz/Germany (link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZDF), Heiko co-wrote and co-produced the tv campaign song “Nullo promillo” which became very popular as the Governor of the German state, Hessen did use the song for his political campaign “Don’t drink and drive” and tie’d it in with commercial campaign for the car manufacturer Opel (GM) and insurance giant HDI.
At this time, Heiko was hired from the Governor’s Head of PR to co-organize the large tv broadcasted final event of this political campaign, prime time broadcasted from Europe’s largest tv channel ZDF.
After this successful tv show with very high ratings, Wolfgang Penk, head of entertainment at ZDF, hired Schmidt as assistant line producer to develop and run other entertainment tv formats.
Between 1990 and 1993 Heiko developed a career as line producer on tv and became a successful tv producer at ZDF. Heiko was responsible for ZDF prime time tv shows such as “Nase vorn”, “Musik liegt in der Luft”, “Silvestershow” and many others.
Between 1991 and 1993 Heiko was working as tv line producer on successful tv shows for other large german tv stations like RTL, SAT1 and ARD on behalf of the tv production house “Live Line TV Productions” , a spin off company from former ZDF Entertainment head Wolfgang Penk.
1993 – 2007: Paramusic
In 1993, Heiko and business partner Roberto Rosan founded their first owned company Paramusic Germany (www.paramusic.com).
The successful music production house, in 1999 transferred to Los Angeles as Paramusic Corporation, which has developed, produced, and marketed more than 30 different artist and music projects in 20+ territories since founded.
The business model was a strong international focus to spot and sign recording artists, in the US, UK and Germany, and record all tracks in house at their well equipped recording studio and licensed the finished productions territory by territory to various record labels.
One of the highlight’s was the global success with the #1 single “Everthing’s gonna be alright” / SWEETBOX in 1998 with total sales of more than 50 Million units worldwide. The record became the most used wedding song in Japan and other asian countries and has reached every green status ever since.
In 2007, Heiko acquired, negotiated and executed a multi million dollar exit for the business to Avex Inc. in Japan.
1994 – 2009: Paramedia
In 1994, Heiko formed Paramedia Germany (www.paramedia.com) , an artist management and media marketing company. Besides managing Paramusic’s artists, the company acquired, developed and executed music related campaigne’s with Coca Cola for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Lancome/L’Oreal Paris for 24 countries, Macy’s for USA, Toyota for Japan, Mercedes Benz for Spain, Samsung Korea for western Europe, Subaru for Japan and Procter and Gamble (different brands) European headquarter in Switzerland for Europe.
For P & G Europe, Heiko invented a revolutionary new system to increase significantly.brand recognition within international tv advertisment campaigns.
He successfully introduced and executed a European wide campaign for Pringles. (www.phifactor.com).
After the incredible success with a 5.5 higher brand recognition quote for Pringles, Heiko was asked to consult the european P & G Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, for other P & G brands (e.g. Hugo Boss Parfums, blend a med etc.)
1995 – today: Parasongs
In 1995 Schmidt has established Parasongs, a music publishing company in Germany, now headquartered in Los Angeles with sister companies in Japan, Australia, UK and Germany. (www.parasongs.com)
Between 2002 and 2004 he invented a complete new international administration system for music copyrights and successfully implemented the system with Parasongs Japan in 2005.
Between 2005 and 2008, Parasongs has managed 165.000 copyrights for 122 publishing clients and through this administration system, Schmidt uplifted revenue in some cases by as much as 7000%
As CEO, Schmidt established the corporations in each country, was responsible for hiring and running the staff, developing the client acquisition pipeline and sync and licensing focus’s in each country.
Since the end of 2009, together with Private Equity Investors in Europe and the US, Parasongs is now acquiring quality music publishing catalogs and was a counter bidder on midsize music publishers and notable catalogs The Parasongs companies are members of the copyright collection societies GEMA (Germany), SUISA (Switzerland), AKM (Austria), JASRAC (Japan), APRA/AMCOS (Australia, New Zealand), ASCAP and BMI (USA).
2009 – present: Parafund Management and Joey Capital
With help from Johann Felch, former global CFO BMW Financial Services and CEO BMW Bank, Schmidt founded Parafund Management LLC in 2009. Together with other seasoned investment professionals, the company
works as a Private Equity Firm, raising funds from LPs and investing in innovative, entertainment related
businesses.

In 2010, Schmidt founded Joey Capital LLC, a family office company, co-investing into media and tech start up companies.
Other Ventures
Between 1995 and 2007, Schmidt was also co-founder, co-owner and managing director on Grupe & Schmidt Entertainment GmbH in Germany (Record Label), Grupe & Schmidt Entertainment Y.K. in Japan (Record Label) and Glodien LLC in Los Angeles (digital music aggregation and –distribution). He successfully exited those businesses.
