Helgi Valdimarsson -'short biography'
Born in 1936, obtained the MD degree from the University of Iceland in 1964, and trained in General Medicine and Medical Immunology at the University Hospital in Reykjavik and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London.
From 1971 to 1975 he was a Lecturer and Wellcome Research Fellow in Immunology at the Royal Postgraduate School and a Senior Lecturer and Consultant Immunologist at the St. Mary's Medical School in London from 1975 to 1981.
In 1981 H. Valdimarsson became the first Professor of Immunology in Iceland, and he was concurrently a Visiting Professor at the St. Mary's Medical School and Imperial College of Science and Technology and Medicine in London until 1999.
In 1991 he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathology in London. Editor of the Scandinavian Journal of Immunology 1985 to 2006 and Editorial Board Member of Clinical and Experimental Immunology 1997 to 2004.
Commissions of trust include deanship for the Medical Faculty of the University of Iceland 1992 to 1996, chairmanship for the Science Committee of the University of Iceland 1991 to 1994 and membership of the Scientific Advisory Board of deCode Genetics from 1998.
H.Valdimarsson was a member of the Icelandic Research Council 1994 to 1997 and represented Iceland in the European Medical Research Council 1994 to 1999. He was President of the Scandinavian Society for Immunology 1992 to 1998 and elected as honorary member of this society in 2008. He was a Fogarty Scholar at the National Institute of Health, USA, 2003 to 2008, and was awarded the Arthur Curtis Visiting Professorship, University of Michigan in 2005.
H. Valdimarsson has been on scientific organizing committees of many scientific meetings, including the 11th International Congress of Immunology in Stockholm in 2001. He was a member of an International Panel for comparing and evaluating clinical research in Medical Faculties and University Hospitals in Finland and Sweden in 2008 and 2009.
