Helicopter shot
Encyclopedia
In Cricket the helicopter shot is one invented by Mahendra Singh Dhoni
. It is played by swinging the bat like a propeller. You can see this shot is already used by Sachin Tendulkar during 2002 so its still not concludent that Mahendra Singh Dhoni
invented it on whole. Dhoni used it for straight sixes while Sachin for silly mid on fours during 2002 as well as in IPL. The shot used by Sachin had only around 45 degrees rotation while Dhoni most of the times hit it with 180 degrees bat rotation. The name of the shot [helicopter shot] if given by a untraceable commentator and it perfectly chooses the action style.
The shot is played to tackle a yorker
and hitting it for a six or four. This helicopter shot doesn't have any style but just like blind rotation of bat from big back lift and hitting from the toe end of the bat. If its not timed correctly it may either result in the batsman being bowled out or getting stumped if the batsman tries it out of the crease
. Dhoni on many recent instances couldn't successfully execute this shot except for the winning final sixer in the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final
.
Sachin has also shown his class by playing the helicopter shot countless times on the front driveway pitch. He has executed the shot off world class bowlers such as Brett Lee, Munaf Patel and Bresnan.
Helicopter shot is a shot played in cricket where the batsman rotates the bat like a propeller. If done properly it can take the ball over the covers or u can get a boundary in the same area.It is mostly used in case bowler bowls a yorker or on an heavy overpitched ball which was bowled with an intention to be a yorker. Though video footage shows the Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar had used similar shots in 2002 Natwest Trophy against England, it does not fit into the exact definition of a full blown helicopter shot.
The shot played by Sachin Tendulkar during 2002 and later in IPL seasons involved rotating his bat approximate 60 to 90 degrees. It was the sixes pulled by Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni
in his early days that popularized this shot. When he plays the shot, he rotates the bat 180 degrees and give all of its power on to the bat so that the entire body of the batsmen will be on air for a flash of a second. If not timed properly, any attempt to hit a six using helicopter shot will uproot the stumps or there is a high chance for a leg before wicket
dismissal since the shot is played on yorker
s which are basically aimed at the stumps.
Like Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni also uses the miniaturized version of the shot while swinging the bat for 90-110 degrees to hit a four. It must be noted that Sachin Tendulkar has never shot a sixer so far by using a helicopter shot and Mahendra Singh Dhoni employs this shot to hit a six most of the time. Again Mahendra Singh Dhoni has mistimed the shots a couple of times resulting in a catch at the boundary line.
