Henry L. "Roddy" Roediger III (born July 24, 1947), is James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor
of Psychology
at Washington University in St. Louis
. He is a pioneer and an internationally-renowned expert in the study of human memory
processes. Roediger's research interests include such topics as how people can suffer memory illusions and false memories (remembering events differently from the way they happened or remembering events that never happened at all), implicit memory
(when past events affect ongoing behavior without one's awareness) and, most recently, applying findings from cognitive psychology
to improve learning
in educational situations. Roediger received a B.A.
from Washington and Lee University
in 1969 and a Ph.D.
from Yale University
in 1973. He has been employed at Purdue University
from 1973–1988, Rice University
from 1988–1996 and at Washington University in St. Louis
from 1988–present, and has served as a visiting professor at the University of Toronto
from 1976–1978 and 1981–1982, as well as Dean
