 he showed while serving as a Constable in the Metropolitan Police Force on the 29th of March, 1958. While on patrol with his partner he chased a burglar

 and was shot by the criminal in the mouth. Despite his injury he pursued the man back through the burgled house and out into the road. Stevens grappled with the man who was finally arrested when two other policemen arrived at the scene. His citation was published in the London Gazette
