Herbal cigarettes are cigarette
s that either do not contain any tobacco, or do contain tobacco
but are composed of other herbs as well. There are several popular brands of such cigarettes, usually containing a mixture of different herb

, they are often used as a substitute for standard tobacco
products (primarily cigarettes), and many times as a tobacco cessation aid. Those that contain no tobacco at all are also used in acting scenes by performers who are non-smokers, or -- as is becoming increasingly common -- where anti-smoking legislation prohibits the use of tobacco in public spaces.

The most noticeable difference between herbal cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes is that because herbal cigarettes lack nicotine, which has a tendency to dull the sense of taste, they cause an unpleasant taste to build up on the tongue after smoking only one or two of them, which can be removed by cleaning the tongue with a toothbrush. In addition, there is less of a throat-burning sensation, which is again due to the lack of nicotine. Herbal cigarettes are not viewed as physically addictive, as they do not contain addictive substances.
