Encyclopedia
The NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (NRC-HIA) is the leading Canadian centre for astronomy
and astrophysics
.
Named for the Nobel laureate Gerhard Herzberg
, it was formed in 1975 as part of the National Research Council of Canada
in Ottawa, Ontario. The NRC-HIA headquarters were moved to Victoria, British Columbia
, in 1995 to the site of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory
.
NRC-HIA also operates the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory
outside of Penticton, BC
and the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre as well as managing Canadian involvement in the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope
, in the Gemini Observatory
, in the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope
, and in the Atacama Large Millimeter Array
(under construction).
The institute is also involved in the development and construction of instruments and telescopes.
Members of NRC-HIA are currently involved with Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey
