. The Community college was founded in 1918. Highland Park Community College was an urban campus and the focus of many efforts to benefit urban populations. Among other programs the college had a nursing program.

WHPR-FM was originally run by Highland Park Community College.

The school was closed in 1996. There were several attempts to save the college, but its failure to receive full support from millages had essentially doomed it. The legislature took up bills related to the college and there were attempts to portray its closing as an attempt by Republicans to undermine education access for African-Americans.
