In May 1949, Hirosaki University was founded with the following original departments:
In April 1980, within the Faculty of Humanities, the courses of Human Culture, Information Management and Social Systems were instituted.
In April 2005, the Course of Information Management was renamed the Course of Modern Sociology. Also the Course of Social Systems was renamed the Course of Business Management and Economics.
In 1965, a Teacher-in-Charge of Health Education training course was established.
In 1966, an Educational Speciality Course was both established and abolished in 1994.
In 1973, a Kindergarten Teacher Training Course was established.
In 1978, the Teacher-in-Charge of Health Education program was renewed.
In 2000, a Special Nursing Educational Course was established.
Also in 2000, a School Education Teacher Training course, a Lifelong Education course, and a Special Nursing Teacher Training course were established.
On April 1, 1951, 10 Basic chairs were inaugurated: anatomy I, anatomy II, physiology, biochemistry, pathology I, pathology II, bacteriology, pharmacology, hygiene, forensic medicine. Also 12 clinical chairs were created in the fields of: internal medicine I, internal medicine II, pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery I, surgery II, orthopedics, dermatology and urology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, obstetrics and gynecology, and radiology.
On April 1, 1953, the Physiology Department was separated into Physiology I and Physiology II.
On April 1,1965 an anesthesiology chair was established.
On April 1, 1966 a parasitology chair was established.
On April 1, 1979 an oral surgery chair was established.
In April 1969, the major of Science was established, but it was abolished in 1978.
In April 1976, the Department of Earth Science was created.
In April 1977, the earthquake and volcano observatory was attached to The Department of Science.
In November 1985, the data processing center was created.
In April 1987, the Department of Informational Science was established.
In June 1994, the synthesized data procssing center was set up.
In October 1997, the Department of Science and Agriculture was reorganized into the Department of Science and Engineering.
In April 2006, the Department of Science and Technology was established in its present style.
In March 1955, the Agriculture Department within the Department of Literature and Science was abolished.
In July 1955, the Faculty of Agricultural was established.
In April 1956, a farm attached to the Agricultural Department was established.
In April 1960, the Agriculture Exclusive Research course was established and abolished in April, 1963.
In April 1963, the Course of Horticulture and Chemistry and the Course of Agriculture were established in the Faculty of Agriculture.
In April 1966, the Course of Agriculture and Engineering was established in the Faculty of Agriculture.
In April 1969, the Horticulture and Agriculture Course changed its name to the Course of Agriculture. Also, Horticulture was established within the Faculty of Agriculture.
In April 1971, the Graduate School of Agriculture graduate course was established.
In April 1990, due to the reorganization of the Faculty of Agricultural, the Biological Resource Science Course, the Agricultural Industrial Science Course and the Agricultural System Engineering Course were established.
In April 1993, the Gene Laboratory was opened.
In October 1997, the Faculty of Agriculture changed into the Faculty of Agriculture and Biological Science.
In October 1999, the Research Laboratory for Radioisotopes was established.
In April 2000, the accessory farm was renamed the Teaching and Research Center for Bio-coexistence due to a reorganization.
In April 2002, the United Graduate School of Agriculture changed into The United Graduate School of Agriculture and Life Science.
In April 2008, Bio-functional Science, Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Bio-production and Regional Environmental Science programs were established in the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Science.

◎Clubs for medical students
☆ There is a Welcome party for clubs at the beginning of the school year. Students in Hirosaki University love their club activities; so senior students recruit freshmen hard when they take part in the campus orientation before they enter university.
☆There is an athletic meet for all of the medical students in Eastern Japan held during the summer vacation. Most medical students in eastern Japan take part in this sports festival and compete in a variety of sports.
In April and May, cherry blossoms are blooming around campus and Hirosaki city. Everyone goes to Hirosaki Castle and enjoys watching cherry blossoms. Hirosaki is famous for the beauty of cherry blossoms and the students all look forward to it. There are often parties and dinners under the blossoming cherry trees in the park.
In October, Hirosaki University's School Festival is held (2011 will be the 62nd annual event)! The students and clubs set up booths to sell things or share their interests and the main event is a concert performed by students. Many delicious foods are sold in dozens of booths around campus and it's a great time. In 2010, as many as 7200 people visited our festival.
Commuting
There are those who commute to Hirosaki University. In Hirosaki trains may only come once per an hour, so it can be inconvenient for students to commute to school because if they miss the train, they must wait for the next train for an hour. Also, trains run slowly, so few students living in other prefectures outside of Aomori Prefecture commute daily to Hirosaki University. Of course, if commuter students fail to get on the last train they can't go home, so they'll have to stay at their friend's house. Commuting from far distances can be difficult.
Dormitories
There are three dorms near Hirosaki University: Hokuou-ryo, Hokumei-ryo and Hou-ryo (-ryo means "dormitory"). Each of the dorms has about 100 rooms. Hou-ryo is for women only, the others are for men. Hou-ryo and Hokuou-ryo are located in the Gakuen district, about 1.5 km from Hirosaki University. They are both five-story buildings. Hokumei-ryo is in the Midorigaoka district and it's a four-story building. In each dormitory, there are two students to each room. There is a lounge, kitchen, and toilet on each floor. A public bath and dining room are on the 1st floor. Students can take a meal every morning and evening except on Sunday during school terms.
Apartments
There are a lot of apartments near Hirosaki University. Students decide where we live based on the style of the house, rent, area and so on. Living alone is more free than in other housings options, but one must do everything by themselves, this sometimes feels less comfortable. However, most of the people live alone for the first time when they become college students, so it is still attractive to live in an apartment.
Boarding Houses
There are many types of boarding houses in Hirosaki. For example, in some boarding house you can't have your friends spend the night, or you must eat dinner with all of the other inhabitants of the boarding house. But, as a general rule, there are two common things concerning boarding house: those who live in boarding houses are provided with meals daily, and they can use public facilities such as public baths, with other inhabitants.
Students must choose the type of housing they feel is best for them and their personal needs and desires; there are plenty of options for everybody.
Yakinikumomo: This Korean barbecue-style restaurant is located in the Tomita district. You can eat many different types of meats and desserts at a low price.
Capricciosa: This Italian restaurant is in Omachi. This restaurant is famous for pasta and pizza.
Doutor Coffee: This café is in Hirosaki station and is famous for coffee and sandwiches.
Konnamura: This izakaya bar is located in Bunkyo district. This bar is commonly used for student drinking parties.
Blue Eight: This café is located in Dotemati. This café is famous for parfaits and there are various parfaits.
Kakki: This restaurant is located in Omachi. This restaurant serves delicious sushi and other Japanese dishes.
Cembalo: This café is located in Dotemati. Many people say they like the atmosphere.
Festivals
Hirosaki is a castle town which has a 400 year old history and is famous for apples and sakura (cherry blossoms) and Hirosaki Castle. Hirosaki has many festivals in each season and attracts a lot of tourists who visit all year long.
Hirosaki Sakura Festival (late April to early May)
The Hirosaki Sakura Festival is held at Hirosaki castle park. Hirosaki's cherry blossoms were selected as one of the "Top 100 Cherry Blossoms Sites in Japan" and is noted for its beauty. This year over two million of people came to this festival to enjoy the 50 kinds of cherry trees and over 2600 trees in bloom.
Hirosaki Neputa Festival (August 1 to 8)
In early August, many people march through the city shouting "Ya-yado-" and pulling a large float painted with a picture of samurai in combat.
Hirosaki Snow Lantern Festival (early to mid February)
Approximately 150 snow lanterns and about 300 small snow domes line the paths in Hirosaki park. A giant snow sculpture of a historical building and a huge snow slide are made for people to enjoy. A variety of events are held on the stage and booths sell various foods to keep you warm as you enjoy the festival.
Shopping
There are many places to go shopping around Hirosaki University. Students often go to Ito-Yokado, a department store, to buy the necessities of life. Sakurano and Applese have many fashion shops, so students often enjoy shopping at these stores. There are luxury goods in Nakasan, so students sometimes go there for shopping. If you want to buy groceries, there are many supermarkets near the university, for example U-Mart, Cub, Satocho and others within walking distance of the university.

There are many clubs for all students to join as well as specific clubs only for medical students. Medical students can join any club, but other students can join only clubs open to all students. According to current students, Hirosaki University students have three options four options for housing while studying at HiroDai: they can a) commute from home, b) live in dorms, c) rent an apartment, or d) take a room in a boarding house.Commuting
