Ipswich Academy is a secondary

for children aged 11 to 16. Holywells High School entered special measures in 2001 and left it in May 2004. Serving an area of social and economic disadvantage, in 2008 Hollywells High School got its best ever results at 31% 5+ A-C, including English and Maths, and achieved 27% in the same measure in August 2009.
The academy has a joint sixth form arrangement with Copleston High School
and delivers a small number of courses for post-16 students on the school site as well as hosting a training centre used by a small number of students to study for apprenticeships.
An Ofsted
inspection in December 2008 judged the Hollywells High School as "satisfactory" and "an improving school" despite the attainment of pupils on entry being well below the national average.

Originally the Church of England
had been named as the preferred sponsor of the academy bid, leading to criticism from the local community, pupils and staff. Other options were considered and in June 2009 Kunskapsskolan became the preferred sponsor.
There is some criticism of the move to academy status and the learning methods supported by Kunskapsskolan from students at the school.
