The main economic sources, in the 18 and 19 Centuries, were agriculture and home cotton
processing. Today the main sources of income include agriculture (about 10% of the total employment in 2000) and factories for the production of office furniture and interiors. Despite local industry, Holziken has a marked commuter population (in 2000 521 commuted away, while only 81 commuted into the municipality).

Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 1.7% of the area. 38.5% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 31.8% is used for growing crops and 10.1% is pastures, while 1.7% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.
