On February 5, 2011 amid the 2011 Egyptian protests, he became the new secretary general of Hosni Mubarak
's ruling NDP party, following the resignation of Gamal Mubarak

On February 11, less than a week after, he resigned from the position and the party . It was the day before Hosni Mubarak
left office.
