In March, 2010, the Mail was accused of running a smear campaign against Paul Smith, the creator of independent Beverley
community news and information website HU17.net, after it reported that Smith's business activities had also included designing websites that contained adult material. The Mail’s reporting – which included using an undercover reporter to ask Smith to design a website for an escort service – attracted a storm of criticism on its website, blogs and Facebook. Critics objected to “unnecessary” and “unsupported” innuendo in the stories, pointed out that the Mail runs its own rival hyper-local site in Beverley, beverylocal.co.uk, and accused it of hyprocrisy because its own classified pages carried adverts for escort services and telephone sex-talk lines. Beverley and Holderness MP Graham Stuart criticized the Mail for "… a sleazy unpleasant story that attacks a bloke running a Beverley website." Mail editor John Meehan defended the paper’s stories as in the public interest because Smith had become a member of a partnership group representing Beverley and because the local authority, East Riding Council, had actively promoted HU17.net. However, HU17.net claimed that the Mail’s story contained factual inaccuracies and stated that, although Smith had been involved in writing computer code for adult sites, he had not been involved in the content of those sites.
