Hunting Park is a neighborhood in the North Philadelphia section of the United States
city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
. Like many North Philadelphia neighborhoods, it grew mainly in the 1920s and 1940s. The neighborhood's namesake is large park which is a regular location for recreation for many in the area. John Philip Sousa
is rumored to have played in the bandstand there (bands still played there until the early sixties), and a minor league baseball
team called the park home; a 'Lake' which was used for renting small rowboats until a city pool was built on the former pier; it also had a ring-catch carousel just south of the center lawn island , and ball fields. it had small wooden concessions stands around the park that sold snacks and bird seed. and large playground and picnic grounds. it was used by local scouts for its then 'Annual Indian Roundup", and other scouting events. it was an important part of the local community. The neighborhood began to lose population in the 1950s. Today there are a number of abandoned structures and a high crime
rate in the neighborhood. However many feel that Hunting Park is becoming slowly gentrified as real estate
values increase and community members become more organized. Today the Neighborhood is mostly Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and African Americans.
