The I-League 2nd Division (often referred to as ONGC I-League 2nd Division for sponsorship reasons) is the second highest division of football in India
after the I-League
.
The I-League 2nd Division was introduced during the 2008 season, having been previously known as the National Football League 2nd Division. The first game was played on the 25th March 2008 and it was contested between Mohammedan
and Amity United.
The winners and runners-up of the I-League 2nd Division are automatically promoted to the I-League
.
Following the decline of the NFL division two, the AIFF decided to relaunch the national league for the 2008 season. The league was renamed the I-League 2nd Division and consists of twelve teams from the NFL former division two. The first ever I-league 2nd Division was sponsored by ONGC, who were also the previous sponsors of the now defunct NFL Division two.
The first match was played in Kolhapur, Maharastra on March 25, between Mohammedan Sporting Club FC
and Amity United FC.

, Vasco SC and Chirag United qualified for I-league 1st Division for 2008-2009 season.
During the 2009 I-league Division 2 a total of 16 teams were involved and one team Happy Entertainment from Tamil Nadu was disqualified. All the other 15 teams were divided into 3 groups of 5 teams each and the top 2 from each group qualify for the final round qualifers.
After the completion of first round of qualification Pune FC
, SESA Football Academy, Lajong SC, ONGC Mumbai, Viva Kerala
and Salgaocar Sports Club
made to the final round.
In Second round the first match was played between ONGC and Pune FC
with ongc winning 2-0.
In second Match of second round played between Viva Kerala
and Lajong FC, Viva Kerala
won 1-0.
The 2010 season qualifying round was held from March 26 to April 25 in three venues in Delhi, Bangalore and Tripura.
There were 21 teams participating in the qualifying round and was divided into three groups. In the end ONGC FC

all made the final group.

made it's debut in the second division I-League during this season. The league saw 21 teams in a fight for promotion to the top flight. On 14 May 2011 it was confirmed that it would be Shillong Lajong FC and Sporting Goa
who would be promoted to the I-League
for the 2011-12 season.
