ISchool
Encyclopedia
An information school, I-School or iSchool is an emergent label of university departments or independent institutions committed to understanding the role of information in nature and human endeavors. It may be used as synonym for "school of information," "department of information studies" or ""information department" although is a more restricted term because I-schools join together in the iSchool organization. An iSchool conducts research into the fundamental aspects of information and information technologies and into the relationships between people, information, science, and technology. iSchools educate information professionals, researchers, and scholars for our increasingly information-driven world.
Over 30 information schools have joined together to form the iSchools organization (formerly the "iSchools Project"), as governed by the iCaucus . Members of this group share a fundamental interest in the relationships between information, technology, science, and people. These schools, colleges, and departments have been either newly established or have evolved from programs focused on information technology

The field is concerned broadly with questions of design and preservation across information spaces, from digital and virtual spaces like online communities, the World Wide Web, and databases to physical spaces such as libraries, museums, collections, and other respositories. Degree programs in iSchools include course offerings in areas such as information architecture, design, policy, and economics; knowledge management, user experience design, and usability; preservation and conservation; librarianship and library administration; the sociology of information; and human-computer interaction and computer science.
