The film was intended as a remake of the 1927 Pola Negri
vehicle Hotel Imperial
(based on a play by Melchior Lengyell). The scenario for the remake was written by John van Druten, with additional dialogue by Grover Jones.
As a result of problems with the script and on-set altercations between Dietrich and Hathaway, producer Ernst Lubitsch
suspended production on the film several weeks into shooting.
