Ibn Dihya al-Kalby (c.1149-c.1235) was a Moorish
Islamic scholar and writer. In order to further his studies, he traveled from Al-Andalus
to Marrakesh, Morocco
, then to Egypt
and Iraq
. At the request of the Ayubid Sultan Al-Kamil
, he wrote his most famous work: "al-Motrib min Ashaar Ahl al-Maghrib" "" (loosely translated: Rhymes from the poetry of the people of the Maghreb
) which was a collection of short biographies of the Al-Andalus
and Morocco
's poets, including their most famous poems. His work is extremely valuable as it preserved some of the oral traditions of the time as well as details of the poets lives.
