SH-40 begins at Exit 31 on Interstate 15; the road continues as Treasure Lane west of the exit. The highway is known locally as Woodland Road on the western part of its route. It heads east through rural Bannock County, passing a truck stop

. The highway meets a local road, which is known as Olson Road to the south of SH-40 and Race-Track Road to the north. SH-40 passes a farm to the north and an Idaho Transportation Department maintenance yard to the south. It intersects Dans Road before entering Downey
