in 1973. He played 12 seasons for Universitatea, winning the league titles in 1980 and 1981. The team also won the Romanian Cup in 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1983.
Balaci got 67 caps and 8 goals for the Romanian national team
between 1974 and 1986. He was unable to play for Romania at Euro 84
because of injury.
He retired from his playing career in 1988, and started working as a football coach with the Dinamo youth side. He came out of retirement to play for Pandurii Târgu Jiu in 1989 and as a player-coach for AS Drobeta Turnu-Severin for the 1989-1990 season. He has coached various teams in the Arab world as well as Universitatea Craiova in two periods.
Raja Casablanca on Tuesday (September 13th) terminated the contract of Romanian coach Ilie Balaci and appointed Fethi Jamal as his replacement, Maroc Football reported. Balaci, who replaced M'hamed Fakhir on July 14th, was tasked with winning titles. Under his leadership, however, Raja were eliminated from the Orange CAF Cup Champions League and the Throne Cup.
