Illinois 171 follows Cumberland Avenue from Chicago southward, as it briefly enters the O'Hare community area listed as 8400 West in the Chicago address system. It then becomes 1st Avenue until it crosses the Cal-Sag Channel, Illinois and Michigan Canal

. It then follows Archer Avenue and parallels the river along the eastern bank until it terminates in Joliet. Illinois Route 53
