. Currently the organisation has more than 600 member schools.
Schools which apply for membership are inspected to ensure they meet the standards of membership. The Association covers a wide range of schools: single sex, co-ed, day, full and flexi-boarding, those with particular religious affiliations or with dedicated provision for children with special educational needs.
Founded as a professional organisation in 1892, IAPS became a business in 1923 and merged with the Association of Headmistresses of Preparatory Schools in 1981. In October 1991, IAPS relocated its headquarters in Kensington
to Leamington Spa.
David Hanson is the Chief Executive of IAPS. John Tranmer was the Chairman of IAPS for 2009/10, and Andy Falconer is the Chairman for 2010/11.
