The Indianapolis Grand Prix is a motorcycling event held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
in Speedway, Indiana
, United States
as part of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing
season. Its first edition took place on September 14, 2008 and was sponsored by Red Bull
. The race was held again on August 30, 2009 and was sponsored by Red Bull
again. It is the only full-card (MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3) United States round on the MotoGP calendar, as the Laguna Seca round is MotoGP only. When Circuit of the Americas near Austin, Texas
opens for the 2013 season, that will also be a full-card race.
The layout is similar to the setup used for the Formula One
United States Grand Prix
between 2000 and 2007, but not identical. It has been reversed to a counterclockwise layout, with a new complex of corners just after the start-finish line, inside Turn 1 of the oval. This means that the bikes do not use any of the banked oval corners. The double-hairpin at the Hulman Straight was replaced with the traditional esses.
The first motorsports event at the track consisted of 7 motorcycle races, sanctioned by the Federation of American Motorcyclists (FAM), on August 14, 1909. This was originally planned as a two-day, 15-race program, but ended before the first day was completed, due to concerns over suitability of the track surface for motorcycle use.The Rider with most victories at this grand prix is Nicolas Terol
with two victories and all the others have only one victory.This grand prix has been won only by Spanish, Italian and Australian riders.
