Institute of Engineering (IOE) is one of 5 technical institutes http://www.tribhuvan-university.edu.np/institute.php under Tribhuvan University
(TU) and is governing body for engineering and architecture education under the umbrella of TU. Established in 1972, IOE is Nepal
's oldest and the widest engineering education consortium. IOE provides Diploma, Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and architecture education through its constituent campuses and several private colleges affiliated to it.
In 1972, the Nepal Engineering Institute at Pulchowk and the Technical Training Institute at Thapathali were brought together under the umbrella of the Tribhuvan University
to constitute the Institute of Engineering and the Nepal Engineering Institute and the Technical Training Institute were renamed as Pulchowk campus
and Thapathali Campus respectively.
Since then, the Institute of Engineering has expanded considerably. The technician programs in Electrical, Electronics, Refrigeration/Air-conditioning Engineering were started in the Pulchowk campus
, with the assistance from UNDP/ILO. The Architecture Technician program was started by the IOE in its own effort. With the assistance of the World Bank and UK, later, the existing technician level courses were strengthened and Bachelor's Degree level course in Civil Engineering was started. Similarly, with the assistance of the World Bank, the Swiss Government, and the Canadian Government, Bachelor Degree level courses in the Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical engineering and Architecture were started in the Pulchowk campus
. From academic year 1998/99 IOE has started Bachelor's Degree program in Computer Engineering. In 1996, Pulchowk campus
, with support from the Norwegian Government, has started M.Sc. Courses in Urban Planning, Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Engineering Pulchowk Campus has also started M.Sc. courses in Renewable energy and Geothermal Engineering, Information and communication and Power systems Engineering effective from December, 2001. The diploma level programs at the Pulchowk Campus have been transferred to other three IOE campuses.
The Thapathali Campus is presently offering three-year Diploma level courses in Mechanical, Automobile, Civil and Architecture Engineering. And Bachelor's degree programs in Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and in Electronics and Communication Engineering.
The Eastern Region Campus in Dharan, which began operating from 1984, was built with the financial assistance from Asian Development Bank and the technical assistance from the UK. This campus initially offered courses at the trade and technician levels. Now, it is offering Diploma level courses in the Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Refrigeration/Air-conditioning Engineering. From academic year 2000/2001 Bachelor's Degree program in Agricultural Engineering has been started.
The Western Region Campus
in Pokhara of IOE became operational from 1987, with the assistance from the World Bank and UNDP/ILO. Initially various trades and technician courses were offered at this campus. At present, it is offering Diploma level courses in the Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Automobile and Mechanical Engineering. From academic year 1999/2000 Bachelor's Degree program in Civil Engineering has been started.

* Introduce IOE and its capabilities to private, public and other organized sectors.
* Formulate the policy and guidelines to make access easy to all sectors of Nepal for their technical requirements, training, research and development.
* Involve private and public sectors in academic activities of IOE.
* Provide ground for talent hunt in the field of technical manpower.
* Assist Government, private and public sectors, INGOs and NGOs to identify, formulate, evaluate and execute technical aspects of their new projects.
* Organize training, seminar etc. on latest technical development and evaluate its implications in Nepalese situations.
* Expose IOE faculties, students and facilities to public and private sectors to make the IOE graduates more competent to face any challenge in their working fields.
* Invite industry based technical experts as resource lecturers in required subjects.
* Assist IOE departments to offer the final year students' projects in joint ventures with industries to make them more market oriented.
* Set up medals/scholarships in the name of organizations or persons for the recognition and memorial events.
* Create massive employment opportunities for Nepalese people through IOE graduates in close cooperation with entrepreneurs on Nepal.

History
History of engineering education in Nepal can be traced since 1930, when Technical Training School was established. Engineering section of the school offered only trades and civil sub-overseers programs. In 1959, Nepal Engineering Institute, with the assistance of the government of India, started offering civil overseer courses leading to Diploma in Civil Engineering. The Technical Training Institute established in 1965, with the assistance from the Government of Federal Republic of Germany, offered technician courses in General courses in General Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Drafting.In 1972, the Nepal Engineering Institute at Pulchowk and the Technical Training Institute at Thapathali were brought together under the umbrella of the Tribhuvan University

Entrance Examinations of Institute of engineering is conducted by the Tribuvan university on yearly basis for freshmen, undergraduate and post graduate intake. CARD [Center for Applied Research and Development]
- Center for Applied Research and Development (CARD) is an autonomous research and development center within IOE, Tribhuvan University. The main objective of the CARD is to sustain the primary mandate of Institute of Engineering to educate and develop new knowledge through a vigorous and highly visible research environment.
- CARD thrives to establish a culture of research and development leadership in IOE. It shall support all kinds of scholarly activities: fundamental research and development, contract research to government, non-governmental and international agencies. It capitalizes on the wide range of multi-disciplinary in-house expertise and capabilities of IOE.
- CARD is receiving support from the Norwegian Universities' Committee for Development, Research and Education (NUFU).
CDS [Centre for Disaster Studies]
- The Center for Disaster Studies has been set up in the Institute of Engineering only last year.(2003) Nepal looses significant number and amount of life as well as property respectively to disaster every year. The major disasters are landslide and flood. It has thus an objective of working for management of disaster in the country. This Center is trying to do this through offering short courses, carrying research and consultancy works in the beginning. The ultimate aim is to begin a Masters Course in Disaster Management in the Institute.
CED [Continuing Education Division]
- Continuing Education Division(CED) is a unit within the IOE. The main objective of this unit is to provide short term tailor made training course. This division has conducted various types of training program on Computer, GIS( in association with the GIS society), Engineering applications( in association with IIT, Universities from USA and Canada). The Continuing Education Division also conducts various training programs open to public.
- Clients seeking short term training services may contact the CED chief. The preparation of the training programs begin with the identification of the training needs. The need identification process involves the interviewing of the potential trainees and their supervisors, and in some cases field visits. After the need identification, the syllabus for the training is prepared by the IOE staff in close co-operation with the concerned technical personnel of the clients. The estimates of costs of the training is made by IOE on the basis of the syllabus and the prevailing unit costs.
CES [Center for Energy Studies]
- Center for Energy Studies (CES) was established on 21 January, 1999 by the Executive Council of Tribhuvan University after the strong recommendation from the conference held in Kathmandu on "Role of Renewable Energy Technologies for Rural Development" in October 1998. The main objective of the center is to enhance promotion and development of Renewable Energy Technologies through study, research, human resource development at various levels and information dissemination for the sustainable development. As an institution within IOE/TU, capacity building of local manpower is the main focused activities of CES. CES has initiated the activities to start the course on Master of Science/Post-Graduate Diploma in Renewable Energy Engineering.
CIMDU [Curriculum Implementation and Material Development Unit]
- The major objective of this unit is to facilitate the departments with various types of academic trainings and seminar.
CIT [Center for Information Technology]
- Center for Information Technology Center for Information Technology (CIT), established in 1999 is one of the major resource centers in the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuwan University that provides Internet facility to the students and faculties of Institute of Engineering as well as to Tribhuwan University. In addition, CIT strives to produce quality software in the country for local and international market and also provides specialized training in any field of IT sector.
- One of the major objectives of CIT is to create a well equipped environment for development activities related with Information Technology. CIT owns a large number of computers and VSAT station to provide Internet facilities to the students and faculties of IOE. With all the facilities, CIT is one of the best research centers for IT sector in the country.
CPS [Centre for Pollution Studies]
- CPS is the newest autonomous Center in the Institute of Engineering system. IOE has been involved in research related to noise, dust, gases, water and land. The state-of-the-art laboratories of IOE and the equipment for pollution studies, coupled with faculty interests in this kind of studies have already produced some pollution studies of national; importance. The State of Pollution Seminar on October 20, 2000, held at IOE, participated by national experts, concerned institutions, and foreigners, also urged IOE to initiate serious pollution studies through a dedicated center for it as an autonomous center within IOE.
- The objective of this center is to provide a forum for Engineers, Environmentalists, Scientists and Sociologists to work together in solving the pollution problems of the industry. The center also works in creating awareness, encouraging recycling, education, and generating long term strategy in this area. i.e.

IECS [Institute of Engineering Consultancy Services]
- Institute of Engineering Consultancy Services (IECS) was established to provide the consultancy services through the well experienced expertise faculties of IOE.
- Consultancy services can be rendered through Institute of Engineering Consultancy Services (IECS) and Research Training and Consultancy Unit (RTCU) in Pulchowk Campus and Consultancy Unit in Thapathali, Eastern Region and Western Region Campus. IECS generally handles consultancy of multi-disciplinary nature.
- The Clients seeking consultancy services should contact Chief of IECS or Chief of RTCU in the Pulchowk Campus, the Campus Chief of Thapathali Campus, the Campus Chief of Eastern Region Campus and the Chief of Consultancy and Training Service Unit in case of the Western Region Campus.
IRCC [Industrial Relation & Coordination Council]
- The newly established Industrial Relation and Coordination Council (IRCC) in IOE is committed for result oriented mutual relation with all public and private organizations. The main objectives of this council are:
* Introduce IOE and its capabilities to private, public and other organized sectors.

- To attain these objectives, IOE has appointed a liaison officers in each campus. The main responsibility of the liaison officer is to liaise with all concerned organizations for their requirements regarding training, consultancy, research, seminars, repair and maintenance etc. They are also responsible for introducing the capabilities of IOE and its campuses to private and public sectors in order to march together for the Genitits of the country.
