Iberia Express is planned to start operations in summer 2012. On 4 November 2011 IAG agreed in principle to acquire BMI from Lufthansa for an undisclosed sum. Subject to clearance from regulators, the deal is planned to complete by April 2012 and will increase IAG's share of slots at Heathrow airport from 45% to 54%.

In April 2010 British Airways and Iberia signed a full merger agreement, with an intended completion date of late 2010, subject to the securing of necessary regulatory appovals.
