It holds an international conference every two years. In 1989, the government of China forced Chinese academics who had been planning to attend the conference not to attend, in the wake of international criticism over the imposition of martial law.

The IVR is made up of several autonomous national associations. In 1968, Iridell Jenkins of the University of Alabama was elected president of the IVR's United States section.
