The Irish Open is formally a men's and women's tennis
tournament held at the Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club in Dublin, Ireland. The event on the Women's Tennis Association
(WTA) Tour from 1971–1973. Originally known as the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships, when the event became part of the WTA Tour, it was branded as Carroll's Irish Open. It is the second oldest tournament in the world, first played two years after Wimbledon began. When it began in 1879 the tournament had the destinction of being the first event to feature men's and women's singles and doubles tournaments as well as a mixed doubles competition. In 2010 it was a men's only event.
