Isang Yun Competition

ISANGYUN Competition is the official title of an international-level music competition
, which is annually held in Tongyeong
, South Korea
. As the title indicates, this concourse commemorates Isang Yun
(1917–1995), a Korea-born German
composer who was born in Tongyeong, the competition's venue town. The competition was established in 2003.

to plan and organize an international competition. In response, the foundation established general pro spectus of an annual instrumental concourse to nurture international young players at age between 15 and 29. Tongyeong

's birthplace. The prospectus made it a rule to hold the competition dates around November 3, the date of Yun's death in 1995. However, there were exceptions in 2003, 2004, and 2009 for various reasons.
Initially, organisers chose instrumental disciplines of cello

and piano
. The first discipline was easily chosen as cello because Isang Yun
himself was a famed cellist in both North and South Korea and his first concerto was a cello masterpiece composed in 1975/76. After debate of managing directors of the foundation, they chose violin and piano subsequently because these were top two disciplines to present the highest quantity of international competitions and Isang Yun wrote comparatively many works based on two instruments. They also found another merit that, after one cycle of three editions, prize winners could have a possibility to constitute piano trio

Organizers made efforts to publicize the competition at the level of international reputation, and it was the best way to get a membership to WFIMC, the World Federation of International Music Competitions. http://www.wfimc.org In accordance with WFIMC statute

and the competition itself.
The initial title of the competition was not Isang Yun Competition, but Gyeongnam International Music Competition, and this title was maintained until the edition of 2008. Organizers could not use the name of "Isang Yun" because the bereaved family would not permit it; they were not convinced that the competition could be maintained to the level of other reputed competitions. After the organizers' continuous persuasion and evident success followed up, his family consented to the renaming of the festival as the "ISANGYUN Competition" in 2008. In order to ensure legitimacy of procedure, organizers made it official to re-title the competition through WFIMC's general assembly in Tbilisi
2008. The foundation makes it a rule to capitalize all letters of "Isang Yun" when officially titling the competition.

from 1st through final stage consists of 9 members, 2 of which should be from South Korea

As of 2011, the competition has completed 9 editions of 3 cycles, taking turns of disciplines among cello, piano and violin. The competition is mainly held on the location of Main Hall(880 seats) of Tongyeong Arts Center.
